In a selfless act of charity in one of Australia’s South West forests. Protestors there stopped logging in an area home to the endangered black cockatoo in which one activist went so far as to lock himself in a bulldozer. According to Western Australia Today, Australia’s Forest Products Commission (FPC) planned to clear over 1200 acres of jarrah and marri trees in Helms Forest near Nannup which just so happens to be the release site for threatened Carnaby’s, Baudin’s and Red-tailed Black Cockatoos. The logging was stopped even though the birds in question are bred and rehabilitated at the Jamarri Black Cockatoo Rehabilitation Centre which is nearby.
Western Australia Forest Alliance representative Jess Beckering said her group will do what it takes to stop logging. She alleges that the FPC posted an 11 million AUD loss on logging and took issue with the fact that the logged trees were used for firewood, charcoal for silicon manufacture and sawmill waste. She further asserted that the logging of the trees amounted to nothing more than vandalism. I kind of like the idea that people can use materials and other resources of Earth for human betterment. Be it for science or construction.
It is difficult to comprehend that a forest as important as Helms would ever be threatened by logging. We are calling on the Premier and the Forest Products Commission to immediately stop logging Helms and all other forests relied on by threatened species to prevent the extinctions of wildlife that are unique to our south-west forests.
I suppose that each of the materials Ms. Beckering has a problem with could also go to heating people’s homes or some sort of product that she or anyone else could personally use. We see another instance of environmentalists preventing the usage of a resource that is used to help mankind advance or provide some sort of benefit. No effort on their part to help the species move to another home or start a preserve for the cockatoo. The real crime is that groups like the Western Australia Forest Alliance will stand up for the life of an animal in order to condemn the lives of humans.
