In addition to not being charged for animal cruelty, a Brenham, Texas veterinarian named Kristen Lindsey has received death threats over her killing a feral cat she alleges posed a threat to her animals. KBTX states the incident took place in April when Lindsey posted a picture of her smiling holding the carcas of a dead cat she killed with a bow and arrow. While, admittedly, the photo was done in poor taste, it caused enough of an uproar to where campaigns sprouted up to have Kristen prosecuted for animal cruelty and have her veterinary license revoked. She even lost her job at an animal clinic she worked at.
Kristen Lindsey’s friends state that she killed the cat because of the potential threat it posed to her animals. The cat she allegedly killed was known as Tiger and it was an orange and white tabby cat that was popular with Kristen’s neighbors. Police were not able to get a warrant to search her premises and a grand jury did not indict her due to lack of evidence.
The fact that Kristen Lindsey had such anger and hatred directed toward her is not only sad it is indicative of the state of the culture. I attribute the outrage she experienced as people seeking justice to prevent the strong (in this case Kristen Lindsey) from the weak (Tiger). Ultimately there is no evidence that the cat she killed was Tiger and, according to the Austin prosecutor who took the case, her killing the cat is a defensible action in Texas. Fortunately, Kristen is still a licensed veterinarian and can find work elsewhere when this controversy blows over.
I could not help but notice that the animal rights people are selective in the lives of the animals they value. The protesters calling for justice for Tiger gave no praise to Kristen for taking steps to defend the lives of her animals. I guess in their eyes, to borrow from the wisdom of George Orwell, all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.
