Environmentalists claim that resources are finite and have used this logic to further their opposition to drilling and extraction of the mineral. The Wall Street Journal has an excellent article (registration required) that debunks that notion in which the main reason for the increase in US oil production is fracking. At best increased carbon emissions are symbolic of our productivity which is what environmentalists seek to destroy.
