A short fracas between animal rights activists and pig wrestlers occurred a few days ago at the Utah County Fair Thursday. One of the activists with the group Direct Action Everywhere (DAE) told Fox News 13 out of Salt Lake City that they were at the fair conducting a peaceful protest in order to protect the pigs when he was attacked.
During the festivities, four activists dressed as clowns entered the pig wrestling ring and would not leave after the sixty seconds allotted, a County Fair representative said. When the DAEers wouldn’t leave they were attacked by a competition team. One activist was pushed while another thrown over the ring’s fence. Police are investigating and charges maybe pressed against the team members involved in the fracas.
I do not approve of violence against peaceful protests so the team members that attacked the activists were wrong and should be charged. However, the four DAE campaigners who entered the ring were also wrong not only for over staying their time but for entering the ring itself. When they did, in many ways the clowns took the risk of being attacked. Small wonder that the two were shocked at the reaction of their attempt to halt pig wrestling.
Animal rights activists subscribe to moral relativism. In this case, DAEers are surprised they are attacked just like other campaigners they will deny having done anything wrong when advocates trespass not only in pig wrestling rings but also in slaughter houses and medical testing facilities to take video footage or to conduct acts of sabotage. In their minds, reality is subjective and they will never be wrong. Fortunately, the County states future pig wrestling events will continue, despite the protesters being there.
