Director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the Food and Drug Administration Michael Landa testified before a US House committee hearing and firmly asserted that the agency has no concerns with the safety of genetically modified foods (GMOs). The hearing was to address issues resulting from a bill that would require food manufacturers to label products that are made from biotechnology.

According to The Hill, lawmakers expressed skepticism at the idea of GMO labels. California Representative Henry Waxman stated, it could lead consumers to believe that the government sanctions the idea that bio-tech foods are dangerous. Landa stated during the hearing that GMO labels are not necessary since the FDA reviews each GMO product before it is released on the market including farmers use of them. He also said during the hearing that GMO foods are as safe as any other equivalent.

Critics, on the other hand, are unconvinced and want GMO products labeled or banned during farmer use or outright. Michael Landa rejected any such notions during his statement. This is good news though I doubt it will deter anti-GMO groups. I am sure they will take something said at this hearing out of context or make it out to be part of the grand conspiracy being committed by companies and government colluding to poison people. In fact, it is the opponents of GMO’s that seek to poison others if not starve people in general.
