Well, I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. I mean, the egg industry fought valiantly but in the end still has to comply with California’s ban on chicken cages. Medical Daily reports that over the last six months, the amount of egg-laying hens in San Diego County has dropped to half in order to comply with the state’s new law mandating they be given larger living space.

Since there are less chickens available to lay eggs, guess what happens next? Prices go up! Golden State consumers can expect to pay more for eggs as early as next week. Supporters of the law claim that the cramped cages chickens were in caused them to suffer and the living conditions also increases the chance of Salmonella contamination. There is no evidence of any of this, also a spokesperson for the California Humane Society states that egg producers have had six years to comply but chose to fight it in court.

Apparently, other states may follow suit as the article states that Oregon, Washington, Michigan and Ohio have legislation pending to put in place what California has enacted. Consumers are paying for cage-free eggs and pasture-raised chickens too. The draw back is that they cost two to three times more than the standard methods used now. With California’s statute consumers may end up paying a lot more for their eggs which means less money to support themselves or their families.

The goal of this law is an example of the evil intent of so-called animal rights groups like the Humane Society who pushed for this law. Now consumers will have to fork out more for food they need to sustain themselves. Not everyone needs to eat eggs but it is one more method to modify human behavior to move away from consuming animal-based food. If I was a California egg farmer I would seriously consider moving to a state that would be less likely to pass such legislation. This new statute is an underhanded attempt to restrict or prohibit a portion of the human food supply. Like PETA, the Humane Society is not about the ethical treatment of animals but is only about the animalistic treatment of humans.
