I guess since environmentalism maybe losing the intellectual battle on so many fronts that some Leftist intellectuals are attempting to repackage the movement into something kinder and gentler. Steven Hayward over at Powerline points out that a group of Leftist intellectuals hammered out a manifesto for what is tantamount to a makeover for the environmentalist movement. The group issued a new manifesto entitled: Eco-Modernism: A Manifesto.
The manuscript endorses such policies such as nuclear power and attempts to make environmentalism into pro-human, supports technology and takes a more positive outlook. It also scorns dogmatism and the doomsday mentality that is indicative of the environmentalist movement. Not surprisingly, Hayward reports the Sierra Club and other green groups have lashed out against the document.
The fact that environmentalist groups would reject a document that seeks to re-package what their movement stands for should be an indication of where their loyalties lie. They deride a proposal that embraces nuclear energy that many environmentalists consider to have some of the lowest carbon emissions (nuclear), reject the doomsday mentality and adopt more pro-human policies. At its core, environmentalism and the groups based on it are anti-human and it is clear that after Steve Hayward points out, essentially, the groups will not change anytime soon.
