Pennsylvania public tells PETA to beat it

During mid-August a truck carrying 80 hogs overturned on a highway in Mannheim Township, Pennsylvania in which several of the pigs were euthanized due to injuries. However, Lancaster Online reports that People for the Extortion Torture and Abuse of human beings (PETA) has applied for a permit to place a temporary memorial for the pigs that died in the accident.

This memorial is intended to remind tractor-trailer drivers of their responsibility to the thousands of animals they carry to their deaths every year, says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman in a press release. Reiman also expresses the group’s hope that the memorial will result in some form of behavior modification too: The memorial will also give motorists food for thought by calling on caring people to spare pigs the terrifying journey to slaughter by going vegan.

PETA’s idea is not setting well with the public and some have taken it upon themselves to express their opposition at Lancaster Online. Some comments at the website include:

Idiots with lots of time on their hands! Get jobs…instead of thinking on the stupidest ideas!

This Friday there will be a fundraiser near the accident site to raise money. Smoked pulled pork barbecue as well as saucy smoked spare ribs, hot dogs and various other varieties will be sold. All proceeds go towards the proposed project or to eating more pork!

And I want a memorial beside it that reads ‘Here lies common sense’

I am embarrassed for PETA. Really a 5 foot tombstone? Might cost more than the pigs were worth. It’s a shame they died but they did and it’s over. Just a thought….. If you have that kind of money to throw around, how about donating some vegan food to the local food banks in memory of the pigs.

all piggies matter! This way so nobody gets offended! lmao….. PETA AND REST OF THE LOONS ……unbeliveable !!

Animal activists care that much about pigs,,, what about human life??? better energy spent fighting for the lives that actually matter.

I think it is heartening that PETA is getting such a negative reaction over their idiotic idea to place a memorial to pigs killed in a truck accident. I do not condone the animal’s unfortunate demise but it goes to show the weird priorities of the organization. The proposal one poster had of donating vegan food to local food banks is actually a pretty good idea. But this so-called memorial one way to demonstrate PETA’s hatred of mankind in the form of attempting to shock or shame people into not using animals for food.
