This week, a German court ruled that the climate cultist group Last Generation must pay the Lufthansa Group €403,000 in damages—a groundbreaking verdict that could set a precedent for future protest actions.
Two years ago, members of Last Generation breached airport security and glued themselves to a runway, leading to the cancellation of 57 flights. Lufthansa sought compensation for customer refunds and payouts as well as extra fuel costs incurred. The €403,000 award is equivalent to more than $467,000 USD.
In addition, the activists were ordered to cover €700,000 in related legal and procedural costs, bringing their total liability to over $1.28 million.
Should the defendants fail to pay the awarded damages, each of them faces up to two years in prison.
Legal and aviation industry experts say this ruling is expected to have a significant impact on numerous other pending lawsuits against climate activists.
