Twenty nine year old environmental science student Amber Canavan never hid her opposition to foie gras. She organized protests against it, posted on Facebook and even shot videos that she put together that have been posted on other sites sympathetic to her cause. However, late one night during 2011, she decided to take her activism to a new level. She took it upon herself to pay at visit to the largest producer of four gras in the country Hudson Valley Foie Gras in the Catskills town of Ferndale, Sullivan County. According to The New York Times, Canavan went on to the property without permission, entered an open barn and started recording some video footage.

While the video she shot ended up on a animal welfare group website, she also allegedly stole two ducks during her visit which resulted in her being indicted on two counts of third degree burglary, a class D felony. This resulted from the narrator of Canavan’s video who stated the investigators were able to rescue a few ducks. She has a long history of activism in Syracuse, NY too. The Syracuse Post-Standard points out that she participated in Occupy Wall Street protests, and also demonstrated against fur and fracking too. She also protested against foie gras being served at a two local restaurants in 2008 and this year as well.

Canaan states she hopes to graduate May of this year. However, if she ends up in jail, graduation maybe the least of her concerns. Amber Canavan should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and I do hope she spends time in jail. Her actions not only involved theft but she may now have her life ruined due to having a felony conviction on her record. Animal rights activists, like Amber Canavan, are nihilistic extremists who prefer the lives of animals over humans to the extent that they will not only lie but also steal to achieve their aims. Spending time and jail and compensating the duck’s owner is the least she can do to make up for her crime.

The foie gras producer and the restaurants serving the product did so in order to provide a service to their customers. Fortunately, she got caught due to a dumb mistake resulting from the narrator to her video revealing her identity by default. It has been said that eating meat helps people’s brain functions. Canavan and her cohorts obviously demonstrate their lack of critical thinking since I have no doubt she and her partners-in-crime are vegetarians.
