A British children’s charity event was closed abruptly after the group hosting the event received constant aggressive messages from animal rights activists via social media. The Argus reveals that The Rockinghorse children’s charity received such venomous messages from animal rights activists on their Facebook page and other social media outlets resulting from the group hosting a charity event at Hove Greyhound Stadium.

Rockinghorse was going to raise funds that would entail greyhound racing for a cardiac monitor for Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital. However, animal rights activists wouldn’t have it and upon learning of the dog racing fundraiser swiftly went into action. One message received of note was an idea put forth that was based on the idea of greyhound betting. In the threat, the activists would go to the hospital’s baby unit and bet on which baby would and would not make it.

The charity considered notifying police but decided not to. It was only when the group who spearheaded the campaign, Greyt Exploitations, that they then apologized for any offense and promised to review their campaign tactics. The group was formed seven years ago to raise awareness about the plight of greyhound dogs used in commercial dog racing. However, the group and its supporters took it upon themselves to send aggressive messages that included thinly veiled threats of violence as th means to shut this event down. As a result of their vicious campaign, the children’s hospital singled out for The Rockinghorse’s fundraiser will not get a cardiac monitor putting patients at great risk for complications related to heart ailments.

Greyt Exploitations said in their apology message that they hope to convince charities to make better informed choices about where they will hold charity events. I think the group should learn to make better informed decisions about what to say and how to conduct themselves when condemning a particular charity event. Then again, if you value the life of an animal over a human, the human’s life is considered secondary and not worthy of saving so death threats are the next step in an animal rights activist’s chain of sick, demented, twisted reasoning.
