Second American allegedly kills lion in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority has revealed that another American stands accused of illegally killing a lion. The Associated Press says Jan Casimir Seski of Murrysville, Pennsylvania, stands accused of killing a lion with a bow and arrow without the necessary approvals and on land where it is not allowed in April near Hwange National Park.

Apparently, Seski is a big game hunter and has used a bow and arrow on many occasions including the incident where he supposedly illegally killed a lion, respectfully. He has gone on a number of hunting safaris in Africa and is a gynecological oncologist who heads the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Neighbors describe him as a bit quirky but, all in all, an above board but private individual. One guide who took Seski on a safari in Zimbabwe in African during 2012 describes him as a perfect gentleman.

Zimbabwe is pursing extradition for Minnesota dentist Walter James Palmer who stands accused of killing Cecil the lion. However, while doing research for this post I noticed one peculiar thing. For those of you who do not know Zimbabwe is a poor African country ruled by socialist dictator Robert Mugabe. Mugabe has nearly run his country into the ground economically and culturally. According to The Observer, the situation in Zimbabwe is so bad that the country’s residents live in extreme poverty, living on aid and illegal practices (like poaching) in order to eke out a living. In 2000, Mugabe kicked out a number of property owners (among them game farm owners) based on false accusations and divided the land among his supporters. Now only 17 of the 682 game preserves are left.

However, according to The Washington Post, his country’s ruinous situation didn’t stop Mugabe from celebrating his 91st birthday at a resort in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, at an estimated cost of $1 million. Almost 20,000 guests were estimated to be in attendance and the main courses were those of a zoo. The menu included a young elephant, two buffaloes, two sables, five impalas, a stuffed lion and crocodile as a gift along with 40 cows and another elephant. Guests were also treated to a 90-minute speech in which he not only decried American sanctions but also called for the seizing of ‘white-owned’ safaris within the country’s borders, similar to his year 2000 land reforms. On other occasions, he has also expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler too.

Mugabe is not only a megalomanic and a racist but he is insane. When he dies I will celebrate his demise which I hope is soon. However, for all of the venomous outcry for the death of Cecil at the hands of a Pennsylvania dentist who was a hunter in his spare time, I have not found any indication of protests from netizens, animal rights groups and environmentalists over Mugabe’s feast. Just goes to show how selective outrage is directed online.
