President Biden’s administration is poised to announce limits on greenhouse gas emissions from power plants that could compel them to capture the pollution from their smokestacks, technology now used by fewer than 20 of the nation’s 3,400 coal and gas-fired plants, according to three people who were briefed on the rule.
If implemented, the proposed regulation would be the first time the federal government has restricted carbon dioxide emissions from existing power plants, which generate about 25 percent of the planet-warming pollution produced by the United States. It would also apply to future plants.
Almost all coal and gas-fired power plants would have to cut or capture nearly all of their carbon dioxide emissions by 2040, according to the people familiar with the regulation, who asked not to be identified because the rule has not been made public.
The proposed rule is sure to face opposition from the fossil fuel industry, power plant operators and their allies in Congress. It is likely to draw an immediate legal challenge from a group of Republican attorneys general that has already sued the Biden administration to stop other climate policies. A future administration could also weaken the regulation.
According to the Energy Information Administration, there are almost 4,000 fossil-fuel power plants across the country that supply more than half of America’s energy needs in which most rely on natural gas, while about 20% of the country’s energy comes from wind and solar power sources. Biden is singling out the fossil-fuel plants and, if he is successful, it will not only result in massive energy and job losses but also loss of life.
Worst of all, The Times says the rules will be applied based on a power plant’s size and how often it is used or if it can operate at all. This as opposed to a single, uniform standard that power plants can easily comply with. The administration also is using this opportunity to ram these rules through before 2024 elections if Republicans take control of Congress.
All this will do is grind America down and put a lot of people’s lives at risk. Not just in terms of their jobs but also their health. Things were bad under COVID-19 lockdowns where relatives couldn’t visit or care for ill and elderly loved ones, but more deaths or serious illness will occur due to Biden achieving his evil goal of European-style energy prices in order to later demand America embrace his so-called renewable energy plans or else.
