If it’s not one thing, it’s another.

The regulations would impose a credit system for manufacturers so that 10% of motorcycles sold in California would be zero-emissions in 2028 and 50% in 2035, according to the state Air Resources Board. At the same time, a tighter standard for new gas-powered motorcycles would ratchet down their emissions for the first time in more than 25 years.

Under the proposed rules, more than 280,000 new electric or hydrogen motorcycles would be sold in California by 2045 — about eight times more than the total on its roads now. Electric motorcycles make up only 1% of current motorcycle sales.

The state Air Resources Board will vote on the proposed rules on Nov. 7 after a public hearing.

Unlike automobiles, motorcycles are used primarily for recreation and not transportation. Consequently, they emit less air pollution than automobiles and trucks.

The Associated Press reports Golden State officials hope more motorcyclists will recognize the advantages of battery-powered motorcycles, such as lower fueling expenses and reduced maintenance. But, similar hopes were articulated by the Biden White House about their electric cars push and that didn’t work either.

The AP also says that motorcyclists have concerns about a lack of infrastructure, the inability of electric motorcycles to be ridden over long distances, the overall cost of owning one, and a lack of choices among motorcycles they can purchase. Similar concerns many automobile consumers expressed when electric vehicles were being promoted too. Not surprisingly, many car and truck manufacturers are scaling back their commitments.

Like the saying goes: The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. Individuals should have the freedom to select the products they wish to purchase, but their decisions should be informed and take into account the impact of significant investments, such as an electric vehicle, on their lives. These choices should not be dictated by government coercion. This isn’t about cleaner air, it is about ruining people’s lives by government fiat.
