January 20th can’t come soon enough.

The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday granted two requests from California to enforce strict standards for vehicle emissions, including a rule aimed at banning sales of new gasoline-powered cars in the state by 2035. The incoming Trump administration is likely to try to reverse the action.

The California rule is stricter than a federal rule adopted this year that tightens emissions standards but does not require sales of electric vehicles.

EPA said its review found that opponents of the two waivers did not meet their legal burden to show how either the EV rule or a separate measure on heavy-duty vehicles was inconsistent with the federal Clean Air Act.

However, California isn’t the only state. 11 other states are also following the Golden State’s lead to ban purchases of gas-powered vehicles too. Worst of all, it is the EPA is letting it proceed. Despite Trump vowing to overturn the EPA’s permission, The New York Times reports California Governor Gavin Newsom will make tax rebates for E.V. purchases available.

Also, the Supreme Court recently agreed to hear a lawsuit from automobile manufacturers seeking to address their ability to challenge the constitutionality of the EPA’s waiver authority. However, as former National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regulator Ann Carlson told The Times (emphasis mine):

“If Trump denies California the ability to issue these regulations, he is stabbing at the heart of California’s ability to clean up greenhouse gases. This would cut the knees out of California and other states that have aggressive climate policies that follow California’s lead.”

That is exactly what should happen since banning gas-powered vehicles in order to favor electric powered ones will mean personal transportation will only be available to wealthy, privileged elites like her.
