Late last month, U.S.-based shipping company, Matson, announced it will stop transporting electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids on its ships due to the fire hazards of lithium-ion batteries, effective immediately. The decision follows the June sinking of the carrier Morning Midas, where a fire, visible at the ship’s stern, highlighted the dangers of lithium-ion battery fires.
Matson isn’t the only provider backing out. Two years ago, the Norwegian shipping company Havila prohibited electric vehicles on its ships following a risk assessment that deemed their fire hazard too high. This decision resulted from an incident where an ocean liner sank due to a fire linked to such vehicles.
Matson’s decision reflects a growing skepticism about the electric vehicle revolution, once seen as the future of transportation. It underscores flaws in the push for ‘green’ ideals, exposing the challenges and risks tied to EV adoption. Insurance companies, likely, influenced this decision too either with higher premiums or policy cancelations.
Who couldn’t have seen this happen? In light of the numerous problems linked to electric vehicles, hybrid cars are being floated as an alternative, but they may be far worse. The electric vehicle push is largely a jobs program for the Left. A feel good effort for affluent individuals to virtue signal, overlooking the real costs and impacts required to realize their eco-friendly vision.
