Billionaire Michael Bloomberg recently gifted the Sierra Club $30 million for the group’s Beyond Coal campaign. National Journal states Bloomberg gave the money as part of a gift giving campaign to fight climate change that he started in 2011. The Sierra Club states that the money will not only help the group combat individual coal-fired power plants but also support the EPA’s coal emissions rules as well as efforts to implement renewable energy sources.
In light of this, Michael Bloomberg deserves praise for his contribution for the greater good, right? Not exactly. A small article in the online political journal Politics on the Hudson has an article revealing something that hasn’t gotten much publicity. As it turns out, Michael Bloomberg has expressed displeasure with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s recent decision to ban fracking in New York State. Citing an article in The Wall Street Journal, Politics on the Hudson points out that Bloomberg stated that Cuomo’s ban on fracking is a misguided policy.
Aside from the obvious event that (yet again) the Sierra Club shows that it is open for hire to the highest bidder, Bloomberg’s remarks defending fracking and his defense of the Keystone pipeline tells me there is more here than meets the eye. My educated guess is that he has some sort of investments or interest in oil production which is why he is seeking to ban coal but talk up and defend oil despite his alleged green record. Looks like a conflict of interest to me.
