20 people are dead and 26 injured resulting from a dreadful mass shooting that took place at a Walmart near the Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, Texas yesterday. According to The New York Times, the suspect is Dallas resident Patrick Crusius. What should be of note isn’t just that Crusius used an AK-47 battle rifle to conduct his heinous act, but a manifesto that he reportedly authored explains his reasons why he decided to act in (what he states is) self defense.
In the text of the manifesto, it reveals not just anti-corporation and questionable views about Mexican immigration and race-mixing, but also his frustration with humans degrading the environment. It states (in part):
“The American lifestyle affords our citizens an incredible quality of life. However, our lifestyle is destroying the environment of our country. The decimation of the environment is creating a massive burden for future generations. Corporations are heading the destruction of our environment by shamelessly overharvesting resources. This has been a problem for decades. For example, this phenomenon is brilliantly portrayed in the decades old classic “The Lorax”. Water sheds around the country, especially in agricultural areas, are being depleted. Fresh water is being polluted from farming and oil drilling operations. Consumer culture is creating thousands of tons of unnecessary plastic waste and electronic waste, and recycling to help slow this down is almost non-existent. Urban sprawl creates inefficient cities which unnecessarily destroys millions of acres of land. We even use god knows how many trees worth of paper towels just wipe water off our hands. Everything I have seen and heard in my short life has led me to believe that the average American isn’t willing to change their lifestyle, even if the changes only cause a slight inconvenience”
His views are very similar to Christchurch mosque shooter Brenton Tarrant whom Crusius does salute in his essay. Both of these men, hold beliefs that are similar to Norwegian shooter Anders Breivik who killed 77 and injured hundreds more people during a mass shooting he conducted during July, 2011. Tarrant is reported to have had brief contact with Breivik before he went on his shooting spree and is a self-described eco-fascist.
The mainstream media will, most likely, downplay or ignore Crusius due to his Leftist or eco-fascist ideology and, instead, focus on demonizing gun rights once again. However, it is abundantly clear that somehow the philosophy these three embraced that has an environmentalist element to it and has filtered into our culture to where people are even acting on their beliefs using violence.
“All mass movements strive, therefore, to interpose a fact-proof screen between the faithful and the realities of the world. They do this by claiming that the ultimate and absolute truth is already embodied in their doctrine and that there is no truth nor certitude outside it. The facts on which the true believer bases his conclusions must not be derived from his experience or observation but from holy writ.” – Eric Hoffer
None the less, heartfelt condolences are expressed to the families and friends affected by the El Paso tragedy.
