Brazil sacks plan to mine Amazon reserve

Brazilian Greenpeace activists successfully lobbied to prevent the passage of legislation that would repeal a 40 year old ban on mining on land 10,000 miles from Brazil’s western border.

Phys.org reveals the region known as Renca, is presently shut off from mining are said to be rich in a number of precious and industrial metals. The country’s president was said to have been friendly to opening the area to mining. Had the ban been lifted, mining in the region would have been legalized and economic development would have occurred. As a result, mining will continue to be conducted illegally.

The legalized mining would have helped grow Brazil’s struggling economy and lift the country’s standard of living. However, wealthy environmentalists think they know better than Brazilians who want to work and make a better life for themselves.
