Oh the irony!

A 200-metre-long bulk carrier just docked in Vancouver, filled up with coal, and is now headed back to Asia where the coal will be burned in steel plants.

That ship’s name? The MV Climate Justice.

Flagged in Cyprus and owned by the Monaco-based firm Safe Bulkers, the ship got its name because it’s reported to be cleaner-burning than its fellow bulk carriers.

But the MV Climate Justice does carry an awful lot of coal; between 30,000 and 40,000 tonnes. Once burned, that size of a load will produce between 60,000 and 80,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide — equivalent to about as much as the per-capita annual emissions of 5,000 Canadians.

The MV Climate Justice is currently on its way back to Asia. The ship expected to dock in Yeosu, South Korea, by October 18th and its cargo will ultimately be used in coal-fired plants. The ship is docked in a terminal that claims it only allows for exported shipments of steelmaking coal rather than thermal coal) but National Post seems to imply, but does not explicitly say, that is the cargo the Climate Justice will be carrying.

The National Post says vessel is one of a number of ships owned by the Monaco-based company Safe Bulkers in which the company owns a number of other vessels such as Climate RespectClimate Ethics, and the Climate Pledge. They supposedly burn fuel cleaner than regular bulk carriers, and do so thanks to emissions scrubbers including occasionally use biofuels.

Regardless of the kind of coal being shipped, ocean voyages can last weeks on average and cargo-bearing ships burn through tons of fuel as well which, in turn, obviously means massive amounts of carbon emissions. Canada exports its coal to Asia while the country’s Liberal politicians restrict Canadians from using straws, restrict oil and gas production along with enact carbon taxes in the name of fighting climate change. In the end, this is nothing more than a racket so liberal Canadians can virtue signal, projecting themselves as morally superior to everyone else.
