Bill Nye was on CNN for Earth Day yesterday and accused the network of doing their audience a disservice for having Dr. William Happer on to discuss climate change. Nye angrily criticized Dr. Happer for not only not being with the so-called consensus that climate change is human caused, but also accused Happer of cherry picking data. William Happer is a physicist at Princeton University and is not convinced human activity is the cause of climate change.
The lively exchange between the two involved Happer pointing out that carbon dioxide was not a pollutant and a natural gas just like water vapor. When asked why he is a climate skeptic, Happer stated that that climate alarmism is built on a dishonest foundation and also correctly pointed out the planet has more plant life growing too resulting from increased CO2. The best part of the debate between Nye and Happer was when the Princeton physicist said:
Let me point out that science is not like passing a law. You don’t have a vote to say how many are for the law of gravity and how many are against — it’s based on observations. And if you observe what’s happening to, for example, the temperature, the temperature is not rising nearly as fast as the alarmist computer models predicted. It’s much, much less — factors of two or three less. So the whole basis for the alarmism is not true, it’s based on flawed computer modeling.
What was surprising is when Dr. Happer said the 2016 Paris Climate agreement (which he opposes) was appeasement in the tradition of British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s appeasements of Hitler with the Munich agreement. Harper made the equivocation that the policies outlined in the Paris Climate agreement, just like those in the Munich treaty, will do nothing except result in a lot of people getting hurt.
The exchange between Nye and Happer is very telling. Bill Nye’s argument style is one of shaming. Many people who debate him end up reacting defensively. But, if Nye faces someone who ignores his shaming technique, he will then turn on the network hosts. It should be noted that Bill Nye is wrong about his assertion that water temperatures have warmed on an average basis. Nye even denied legitimate science at one point with his denying the science of GMO’s. You can watch the exchange below:
