The Biden Administration is undoubtedly colluding with environmentalists to shut down Maine’s lobster industry.
Maine lobstermen are making a last-ditch push to scuttle a federal monitoring program seeking to protect critically endangered North Atlantic right whales.
In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court, lawyers for five lobstermen argue that new federal fisheries monitoring rules violate the Fourth and 14th Amendments of the U.S. Constitution.
The restrictions, which went into effect on Dec. 15, require Maine lobstermen with federal lobster fishing permits to install 24-hour electronic tracking devices on their vessels.
For years, The Center Square reveals, environmentalists have been trying to restrict or even ban commercial fishing nets and equipment in Maine’s waters. In 2022, some California environmentalists published a red list in order to discourage Pine Tree State restaurants from purchasing Gulf of Maine lobster. According to USA Today, large chain supermarkets, like Whole Foods, and large chain restaurants, like Cheesecake Factory, opted not to buy Maine lobsters resulting from the Golden State environmentalist’s slander campaign.
Since Biden took office, the harassment of Maine’s lobster men alleging their lobster traps ensnare whales has been ongoing. According to Fox Business, the Biden administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service tried to impose operating limits on Maine lobstermen two years ago including new technical standards on how much trap rope they could use in the water. Thankfully, the rules were struck down in court.
This time, Biden is forcing Maine lobstermen to install 24-hour monitoring devices on their vessels regardless if they are in operation or not. The Center Square reports that the lobstermen say the devices are being used for purposes not related to commercial fishing such as collecting information on where to locate off-shore windfarms. Of course, environmentalists support these rules
Biden’s campaign against Maine lobstermen isn’t about preserving endangered species but is part of a broader plan to destroy any semblance of self-employment, if not self-reliance. Not only is Biden attacking Maine’s lobstermen, but his Labor Department will soon have rules enacted modeled after a 2019 California law that has literally destroyed independent contracting jobs in the state.
