After a wind turbine blade malfunctioned because of a manufacturing defect near Nantucket, Massachusetts. The large Vineyard Wind facility was shut down, and the city was preparing to file a lawsuit. Nantucket’s famous beaches were littered with sharp, fiberglass fragments, creating an undesirable situation during the peak summer tourist season.

Debris from the fallen blade is still washing up on the shores, now affecting Westport, Massachusetts, and more may be headed toward Rhode Island.

In light of these events, thankfully, East Coast communities are beginning to wake up from their green energy aspirations as they grasp the extent of the windmill’s failure and its environmental repercussions. Long Island officials are now asking the Norway-based energy company, Equinor, about emergency plans in place for its Empire Wind facility in the event of a similar incident.

It would not be surprising if Equinor representatives are only partially responsive to the recently expressed concerns of Long Island authorities. They will undoubtedly offer reassurances and empty statements like Vineyard Farms representatives were in Nantucket, but even Equinor’s reassuring statements will (likely) be empty.
