Elon Musk has labeled the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) as a criminal organization, accusing it of funding bioweapon research, including activities that may have contributed to the start of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Musk’s remarks were triggered by a post on X, which stated that USAID had allocated $53 million to EcoHealth Alliance. This money was purportedly used for gain-of-function research on coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, potentially playing a role in the emergence of the virus.

Musk didn’t provide further details on the accusations, but the X post he commented on went on to claim that the CIA’s misinformation about the origins of COVID-19 is easier to understand when you look at USAID’s extensive background as a front for the CIA.
The EcoHealth Alliance has come under scrutiny for its work with the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China. Despite denying involvement in gain-of-function research, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services cut off all federal funding to the environmentalist organization, citing inadequate oversight of dangerous experiments and delays in reporting research activities.
Last month, a CIA spokesperson indicated that the agency now deems it more likely that Covid-19 stemmed from a lab leak rather than a natural zoonotic event, following the confirmation of John Ratcliffe as CIA Director. Ratcliffe has publicly endorsed the lab-leak theory as the only one backed by science, intelligence, and common sense. He has stated that reviewing the origins of Covid-19 would be a priority upon taking office.
As it turns out, USAID, known for supporting international health programs, previously funded the PREDICT initiative from 2009 to 2020 in collaboration with EcoHealth Alliance to detect viruses that could cause pandemics. According to Science, USAID initiated another program four years ago, the Discovery & Exploration of Emerging Pathogens – Viral Zoonoses – with a $125 million budget, but this was terminated in 2023 before completion.
Elon Musk and his merry band of auditors at DOGE have been busy working to take a whack at the Deep State. Trump, likely, asked the group to take a look at USAID possibly due to getting information of the group’s role while he was out of office. It is good that the President achieved a semblance of justice in this regard and there’s, likely, more of this to come.
