The environmental justice movement is characterized as a contemporary progressive effort that began in the early 2000s. It contends that economically disadvantaged and minority communities are unfairly targeted as locations for industrial waste and pollution. Nevertheless, those who were dismissed were political activists and were not hired to do actual work.

If any private or governmental entity abridges a person’s health or property, that person has the legal right to sue for damages. This common law principle was considered sufficient for centuries, long before the term environmental justice came into vogue.
