James Welch, a genetic counselor at the National Institutes of Health, was secretly recorded admitting to an Okeefe Media Group undercover reporter that he assists researchers in tweaking their grant applications to evade federal limitations.
Employed at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Welch explained how he guides principal investigators (PIs) at the NIH to rephrase their proposals to avoid detection by government oversight entities, such as the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
He confessed that certain terms, including women and female, are among the prohibited words that DOGE flags for grant rejections. Welch further acknowledged that he had to review the leaked list of banned words to determine how to advise researchers on alternative phrasing to circumvent these restrictions.
Welch also admitted to wanting to shoot people at NIH My mom told me today not to shoot anybody… but they won’t let me close enough to these f*cking people.
