The facility has become notorious for being a climate alarmist hub and leftist activism.
The Trump administration said it will be dismantling the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, one of the world’s leading Earth science research institutions.
The center, founded in 1960, is responsible for many of the biggest scientific advances in humanity’s understanding of weather and climate. Its research aircraft and sophisticated computer models of the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans are widely used in forecasting weather events and disasters around the country, and its scientists study a broad range of topics, including air pollution, ocean currents and global warming.
But in a social media post announcing the move late on Tuesday, Russell Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, called the center “one of the largest sources of climate alarmism in the country” and said that the federal government would be “breaking up” the institution.
But there’s more to the story than meets the eye.
The National Center for Atmospheric Research established exclusive affinity groups based on race, intended to segregate employees according to racial lines and other protected categories. Known as Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), these were presented as voluntary, though non-participation was tracked.
In time, they directly influenced personnel management decisions. By their very structure, the ERGs aimed to secure resources and channel them exclusively to group members, mainly defined by race or gender.Directing NCAR resources to these affinity groups preferentially on racial and gender grounds encouraged exclusion and sparked resentment among excluded demographics, particularly white men.
Rather than prioritizing scientific research, NCAR has been infringing upon the Civil Rights Act.
The Trump Administration maintains that the core issue isn’t fundamental meteorology, but rather the gradual overreach that has transformed government science into a weapon for political purposes, with scientific results and messaging increasingly shaped, they assert, to support broad regulations, financial incentives, and spending akin to the Green New Deal.
NCAR is only being separated from that saves the institution from climate alarmists. Trump is actually saving the institution from the left’s cancer.
