The American Civil War wasn’t solely about slavery; it was also fought to resolve a political conflict over whether a majority possesses the authority to supersede minority rights. The Confederate States of America was essentially established not merely to safeguard America’s peculiar institution (slavery), but also to preserve or restore the concept of majority rule. This stands in direct opposition to what the United States Constitution represents, and thankfully, the Confederate States were defeated in the Civil War.
Given that the Southern states which seceded consisted largely of Democrats and stayed predominantly Democrat for considerable time following the Civil War’s conclusion, it comes as no surprise that, even now, Democrat-controlled states have established a neo-Confederacy opposing President Donald Trump’s initiatives. The Guardian reveals several states are implementing environmental regulations across numerous issues ranging from climate change to water contamination.
From a legal standpoint, these strengthened regulations as The Guardian describes may fall within each state’s authority to implement. Nevertheless, there are instances where three of the most staunchly Leftist states have operated beyond their legal jurisdiction to establish policies designed to hinder the Trump Administration. For instance, Washington has prevented coal exports from ports under its control. California has also undertaken comparable attempts to restrict coal exports, and additional efforts are underway by environmental activists to not only halt the production and transportation of fossil fuels but are using lawfare to assault our overall standard of living.
At one point, California partnered with Quebec to establish an international pact aligned with the objectives of the Paris Climate Accord, specifically aiming to fight human-induced climate change. So far, ten Blue U.S. states have joined this climate alliance and Virginia is poised to be the latest addition. Not surprising in light of its so-called moderate governor and Democrat-dominated legislature ramming through a series of climate laws that are making resident’s lives miserable.
The core issue, however, is that the actions taken by these specific states exceed their legal and even moral authority. California’s formation of an international treaty is argued to be unconstitutional; moreover, in both previously mentioned instances, foreign policy is constitutionally the domain of either the Executive Branch or Congress, depending on the circumstances.
Thus far, this courageous, environmentally focused “neo-Confederacy” was initially limited to three states, only for others to have joined down the line. Rather than direct physical enslavement involving chains on individuals’ bodies, this new Confederacy will sacrifice its citizens through exorbitant taxes and energy rationing.
These measures result in soaring energy costs and a diminished quality of life. To their credit, the Confederates were rational enough to admit they were defeated with some (like Robert E. Lee) committing to aid in the readmission of the Southern states into the nation. The contemporary Jacobins, on the other hand, will never admit defeat or that they were ever wrong. The ideology underpinning slavery did not vanish with the Civil War but has evolved into a new form. This time, slavery is being imposed by these rogue states to appease the envious Earth mother deity, Gaia.
