Despite the growing deindustrialization of Europe, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran has reinforced the EU’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions across the continent. She emphasized that Europe is suffering significant economic consequences due to its dependence on fossil fuels, pointing to the Strait of Hormuz situation as a key example.
President Donald Trump declared that the Strait of Hormuz would be blocked for vessels paying passage fees to Iran, with the restriction beginning Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time. In response, von der Leyen highlighted the substantial costs Europe faces from fossil fuel reliance.
Oil prices rose sharply during this period, climbing from $67.02 per barrel during late February to 104.73 by Monday—an increase exceeding 50% since the start of Operation Epic Fury. Von der Leyen encouraged European nations to persist with their efforts to move away from fossil fuel dependence.
