Politicians often insist they aren’t outlawing older vehicles. Behind the scenes, however, they’re steadily raising the cost of keeping the car you already own, piling on extra environmental rules and fees making everyday vehicle use more inconvenient until most people trying to make ends meet are nearly driven into poverty and end up having to buy something new. That same approach is already playing out in California, Massachusetts, Illinois, and a growing number of other states, and almost no one in the automobile media is willing to call it what it is.
