A curious meeting took just place in Bangladesh. Participants in a conference entitled: Organic Food: Consumers’ Health, Bio-diversity and Environment gathered to discuss health risks associated with pesticide use in the country. The event’s participants stated there is a food crisis because of pesticide use despite stating such a debacle is non-existent. Unless pesticides are involved.
According to the Dhaka Tribune, farmers who use chemicals and pesticides in crop cultivation are hindering the food chain and environment of the country. I suppose it did not cross the meeting’s attendees’ minds that pesticides are not only subject to rigorous testing before released and are regulated but that organic foods also use pesticides just like genetically modified ones. Nor that organic or so-called natural pesticides are not as effective as the synthetic ones. Consequently, it makes them more vulnerable to insects for organic farmers use more pesticides.
The meeting attendees also said that the usage of these pesticides is causing harm to biodiversity and that the organic farming system that doesn’t utilize chemicals (i.e. pesticides) should be promoted. However, due to the slower manner that it takes to cultivate organic crops which means it not only costs more but takes longer to get organic foods on to people’s dinner tables. If organic farmers can prevent insects from eating them.
