GMO skeptic Bill Nye has a change of heart?

Science author Keith Floor has authored an extensive story on his blog at Discovery magazine’s website pointing out an alleged change of heart by science commentator Bil Nye of Science Guy fame. Almost ten years ago, Nye did a segment on his show demonstrating concern about the alleged hidden dangers of genetically modified foods (GMOs). Recently, however, Nye was able to pay at visit to Monsanto and talked to the company’s scientists about their work. Apparently, Nye hasn’t announced a change of heart but will with the release of a forthcoming book.

According to Floor, in October, Nye was on reddit and confronted by a big fan of his expressing his disappointment with Bill Nye’s skepticism about GMO’s. The fan said to Nye:

….so I want to ask, in light of the wealth of evidence demonstrating the safety and utility of agricultural genetic engineering, could you clarify your current stance on the subject, and have you changed the views you expressed then?

To which Nye replied:

I stand by my assertions that although you can know what happens to any individual species that you modify, you cannot be certain what will happen to the ecosystem.

Also, we have a strange situation where we have malnourished fat people. It’s not that we need more food. It’s that we need to manage our food system better.

So when corporations seek government funding for genetic modification of food sources, I stroke my chin.

As this video will reveal, Nye seems to have changed his mind after his Monsanto visit. Thankfully, it is looking like Greenpeace can no longer consider Nye a like-minded ally. Good for him!
