People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has awarded Salt Lake City with accolades for canceling their New Year’s Eve fire works display. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the reason for the recognition is that the group opposes fire works because they strike undo fear upon animals causing them to panic in numerous ways.

Salt Lake City announced they cancelled the fireworks due to concerns with air quality. The celebration to ring in 2015 will go on as planned. PETA’s opposition to fireworks is about the group’s hostility to humans having fun and enjoying themselves. It’s not about concern for pets as much as it is about being nothing more than a bunch of prudes.
