It was on this day, in 1492 that Italian explorer Christopher Columbus spotted (what are now known as) the Bahamas islands. Though Columbus was not the first explorer to explore the area, the significance of his voyages is that he opened the New World to Western Civilization.
Argentinian President Javier Milei (who is of Italian descent) posted this video commemorating Columbus Day that includes highlighting the explorer’s accomplishments.
Columbus’s willingness to undertake such a voyage also greatly enhanced the quality of life for Europeans too. However, woke or Leftist activists have taken it upon themselves to focus on the fact that Columbus’s doing so also opened the Americas to the slave trade and he benefited from it. As Michael Knowles points out, the truth is a little more nuanced and full of inconvenient truths the Left would rather not be known.
When the Left’s cultural onslaught began four years ago, one of the areas targeted was South Philadelphia, home to a huge Italian community. The woke, culture warriors tried to take down a statue of Christopher Columbus in Marconi Plaza and South Philly’s Italian community rallied. Thankfully, in the end, they won.
If a restoration of the damage the left has done or a counter cultural movement is undertaken, they should take inspiration from the example South Philly Italians set.
