The horrible box office performance of Disney’s Snow White has resulted in, not only a number of critical commentaries and reviews, but also scrutiny of the movie’s carbon footprint. As it turns out, The Guardian reveals that, on average, Snow White resulted in 62% more than average carbon emissions.
Since filming Snow White on site at Pinewood Studios near London, England, Disney was required to submit an emissions report to be eligible for UK tax credits of up to 25.5%. The Guardian reports elevated emissions figures were linked to portable generators and fuel usage, despite Disney having also used battery-powered generators.
The environmental impact is calculated in tons of carbon dioxide, with a typical blockbuster film producing around 2,600 tCO2e (tons of carbon dioxide emissions). However, Snow White, emitted 3,153 tons, exceeding the average by approximately 550 tons.
On the other hand, another Disney live-action movie, The Little Mermaid, produced roughly 5,127 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, nearly double the average for a major film. Together, The Guardian highlights, both Snow White and The Little Mermaid emitted a total of 8,279.6 tons, which surpasses the 7,829 tons generated by Birmingham Airport during 2023-24.
But, have no fear, Disney incorporated renewable energy through Pinewood Studios by utilizing rented electric vehicles, and limited charter flights to transporting the full crew. The House of Mouse said that this approach is more environmentally friendly than commercial air travel.
The Walt Disney Company highlights its conservation initiatives, yet (ironically) the emissions from just two of its recent films exceed those of a major airport in a single year, even with measures in place to reduce carbon output. Then again, the audience is helping to offset the movie’s carbon emission footprint due to few people going to see the film, so leading lady Rachel Zegler’s bad reputation had some benefits after all.
This is not additional criticism directed at Snow White, but reveals the mainstream media is starting to turn on the House of Mouse after championing the Diney’s woke direction for years. But, now that the corpse is rotting, the media hopes to avoid the stink resulting from their handiwork getting stuck on them believing it will somehow help them regain audience trust.
Too little too late.
